What it is

The Loran Award looks at character, service and leadership, not only marks. It is renewable for four years at one of 25 Canadian partner universities, including UBC.

Scholars get a full tuition waiver, a $12,000 yearly stipend, summer program funding and a mentor. The foundation values the award at about $150,000.

Applicants who reach the later rounds can also win one-time awards: up to 54 finalist awards of $6,000 and up to 70 provincial awards of $3,000.

To apply for 2027 entry, students must be starting university for the first time in September 2027, have at least an 88% cumulative average, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and be born between January 1, 2005 and September 1, 2011.

Grade 11 families: the deadline comes about six weeks into Grade 12, so plan over the summer before.

A good fit if: Grade 12 students with a record of service, leadership or taking initiative, and at least an 88% average.
