What it is
Surrey Libraries runs a yearly contest with four categories: short stories (up to 1,500 words), poems (up to 36 lines), comics (4–7 pages) and a random category for other writing.
Writers can submit one piece in each category.
In 2026 it was open to Surrey residents born between 2008 and 2014. Winners are celebrated at an awards gala in October.
AI-written work, fan fiction and retellings of existing stories are not allowed.
A good fit if: Surrey teens who write stories, poems or comics.
How to register
- Students submit their own work online. It doesn't go through school.
- Your child needs their own Surrey Libraries card in their own name, made in person at a branch with ID. Cards made online don't count.
- In 2026, submissions opened May 19 and closed July 20.
How to prepare
- Read past winners and finalists on the contest page.
- Keep early drafts and notes. The library may ask for proof that the work is your child's own.
