What it is
Students write the first page of a novel set 150 years in the future, with a main character facing an issue that matters today.
Entries are 300 to 400 words, plus a title. Any genre is welcome.
It's open to Canadian residents who are full-time students in Grades 7 to 12. There are two categories: Grades 7–9 and Grades 10–12.
In 2026, each category winner received a one-year OwlCrate book subscription, and their school library received 50 books.
A good fit if: Teens who enjoy creative writing, especially science fiction and big-idea stories.
How to register
- Students enter online through the CBC Books page. It doesn't go through school. CBC also offers classroom resources for teachers.
- In 2026 the challenge was open February 1 to 28. The 2027 dates haven't been announced.
How to prepare
- Read past winners and finalists on the CBC Books website.
- CBC links to free classroom resources and writing tips from Canadian authors on Curio.ca.
- Work on a strong opening scene. 400 words goes quickly.
