What it is
Students write the Grade 10 Numeracy and Grade 10 Literacy assessments in Grade 10, and the Grade 12 Literacy assessment in Grade 12. All three are required for the Dogwood diploma.
Each one is designed to take two hours, with up to an extra hour if needed. They are written online at school, and Grade 10 Numeracy also has a short paper part.
Results use four levels: Emerging, Developing, Proficient and Extending. The best result goes on the transcript. For Grade 10 Literacy, the transcript only shows RM (requirement met).
Students can write each assessment up to three times: the first attempt and two rewrites.
French Immersion and Francophone students who want a dual diploma write extra French literacy assessments. Students who start the BC Graduation Program in Grade 11 or 12 don't need Grade 10 Literacy, but still write Grade 10 Numeracy and Grade 12 Literacy.
A good fit if: Every family with a child in Grade 10 or Grade 12, and Grade 11 students planning a rewrite.
How to register
- The school registers students. Ask the counsellor which session your child is booked for, especially if they want to rewrite.
- Students can check results through the StudentTranscripts Service once they are released.
How to prepare
- The ministry posts sample assessments and specifications on the curriculum website. Trying a sample helps students know the format.
- Numeracy is about using math to solve problems and explain answers, not one specific course.
For grade-by-grade options see Grade 10, Grade 11, Grade 12.
Common questions
Does my child have to pass the Grade 10 numeracy assessment to graduate?
Students must write all three graduation assessments. The ministry's policy guide sets the requirement at the lowest proficiency level or higher, so writing it is what matters. The best result shows on the transcript.
Can students rewrite the BC graduation assessments?
Yes. Each assessment can be written up to three times, and the best result is recorded on the transcript.
When are the 2026–27 graduation assessments?
November 2–6, 2026; January 11–22, 2027; April 12–16, 2027; and June 7–18, 2027. Your child's school decides which session and day they write.
