What it is
Fryer is for Grade 9, Galois for Grade 10 and Hypatia for Grade 11. Motivated students in lower grades may write any one of them.
Each paper has 4 problems in 75 minutes, worth 40 points. Some parts ask only for an answer and others ask for a full written solution.
They're a good way to learn how to explain math clearly, which matters for later contests like the Euclid.
A good fit if: Grade 9–11 students who like explaining their thinking, not just finding the answer.
How to register
- Students can't register themselves. A teacher orders the contest for the school through the CEMC Contest Supervisor Portal. If your school doesn't take part, you can ask another local school to let your child write with them.
- The school ordering deadline is March 11, 2027.
How to prepare
- Past contests and solutions are free at cemc.uwaterloo.ca/resources/past-contests.
- Have your child write out full solutions to old problems and compare them with the official ones.
For grade-by-grade options see Grade 9, Grade 10, Grade 11.
