What it is
The AMC 10 is for Grade 10 and below (under 17.5 on contest day). The AMC 12 is for Grade 12 and below (under 19.5). Both have 25 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes.
The AMC 10 covers algebra, basic geometry, number theory and probability. The AMC 12 adds trigonometry and advanced algebra and geometry. No calculus.
Each has an A and a B date. A student can write both dates but can't write the AMC 10 and AMC 12 on the same day.
MAA describes them as the first step in qualifying for the USA team at international competitions such as the International Mathematical Olympiad.
A good fit if: High school students, and strong Grade 8 students, who like hard multiple-choice problems.
How to register
- Students and parents don't register with MAA directly.
- Ask your school's math department if it hosts the AMC 10/12.
- If not, ask local colleges, universities, math circles or learning centres. MAA's list of last year's host centres is a starting point.
- Act right away for 2026: the contests are in early November.
How to prepare
- Practise with past AMC 10 problems under a 75-minute timer.
- The CEMC Pascal, Cayley and Fermat contests and the COMC build similar skills.

Can a Grade 8 student take the AMC 10?
Yes. The AMC 10 is open to students in Grade 10 and below who are under 17.5 on the contest day.
