Kindergarten and French Immersion 2027: Vancouver and Burnaby dates

Who's eligible for kindergarten in September 2027, when to register, and how the French Immersion draws work in Vancouver and Burnaby.

Is my child starting in 2027?

In BC, a child starts kindergarten in September of the year they turn five. For September 2027, that's children born in 2022.

Vancouver: two steps

Step 1: Register at your English catchment school between November 1, 2026 and January 31, 2027. Everyone who registers in that window has equal priority, and a random draw is used if there isn't enough space.

Step 2 (optional): Apply for a choice program (Early French Immersion, Montessori, Early Mandarin Bilingual, Fine Arts or Indigenous Focus) at kchoice.vsb.bc.ca between 9 a.m. January 5 and the end of day February 2, 2027. You can list up to three locations, and a random draw decides places.

Documents: proof of Vancouver residency, your child's ID, your photo ID and immunization records.

Burnaby: February

Burnaby hasn't published its 2027 dates yet. In 2026, registration opened February 2.

For French Immersion, complete preliminary registration at your catchment school, then the District Language Program online application, both in February. All February applications have equal priority, and the lottery is held in early March.

Burnaby accepts Early French Immersion students in Kindergarten or Grade 1.

Common questions

Is French Immersion first come, first served?

No. In both Vancouver and Burnaby, places are decided by a draw among everyone who applies in the window.

What if we miss the French Immersion window?

You can still register for kindergarten. Burnaby also accepts Early French Immersion in Grade 1, and both districts offer Late French Immersion starting in Grade 6.
