Provincial Foundation Skills Assessment (Grades 4 and 7), compared with the BC average, using the latest years available. Results mostly reflect who attends a school, not only how well it teaches.
What “Above, Around or Below BC average” means
It's a comparison of the Province's published results with the BC average, not FirstBell's opinion of a school. We don't visit schools or score teaching.
- Elementary: the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) in Grades 4 and 7, reading and numeracy. We use the average score over 2023–2024 to 2025–2026. A school is above or below on a measure if it's more than 15 points from the BC average (scores run from about 200 to 800).
- Secondary: the Grade 10 numeracy and Grade 10 and 12 literacy assessments (more than 5% above or below the BC average score), and the share of first-time Grade 12 students who graduate (more than 5 percentage points from BC), from 2022–2023 to 2024–2025.
- Overall label: “Above” when at least two measures are above and more are above than below; “Below” the other way round; otherwise “Around”.
- Not compared: results from fewer than 15 students, from tests fewer than 70% of students wrote (those who write aren't a fair sample), or from before 2023. Schools with nothing left to compare are “Not rated”.
Results mostly reflect who attends a school: family income, English learners, students with special needs. Catholic schools choose their students and nearly all of them write the tests, so their results aren't a like-for-like comparison with public schools. Visit, and ask the school about the things that matter to you.
