What it is
Students compete in skill areas. Technology contests include Website Design, IT Office Software Applications, IT Network Systems Administration, Electronics, Mechatronics, 3D Game Art and Character Computer Animation.
Jr. Skills is for Grades 6–9 and includes VEX IQ robotics and Sumo Robot, in teams of 2–4.
Regional contests lead to the provincial final. The national final is in Calgary in late May 2027.
A good fit if: Hands-on students who like building, coding, design or electronics.
How to register
- A teacher or career coordinator registers students. Start by talking to your child's tech or career teacher.
- Metro Vancouver schools are in the Central Lower Mainland, North West Lower Mainland or Lower Fraser Valley regions.
How to prepare
- Read the scope document for the contest area on the Skills Canada BC website.
- Practise the actual task under time limits.

Can Grade 6 students take part?
Yes, through Jr. Skills, which is for Grades 6–9.
Is there a robotics contest?
Yes. Jr. Skills includes VEX IQ and Sumo Robot contests.
