What it is

Teams take part in a science quiz and a hands-on engineering challenge. There's also a team spirit award.

In-person teams have 2–4 students. There are also virtual live and on-your-own-time formats with no team size limit.

Usually, practice runs from February to mid-April, and the final events run from mid-April to late May.

A good fit if: Middle school students who like science trivia and building things with friends.

How to register

  1. An adult registers the team. A teacher, parent or homeschool group can do it.
  2. Let's Talk Science says 2027 registration details and locations will be announced in November 2026.

How to prepare

  • Use the handbook Let's Talk Science releases in February.
  • Do simple building challenges at home, like paper bridges or towers.

For grade-by-grade options see Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.
