What it is
Port Moody Secondary runs SD43's International Baccalaureate program. Students start Pre-Diploma classes in Grade 9 and finish with the IB Diploma in Grades 11–12.
The program keeps about 150 students per grade. A very small number of places may open for Grade 10 or 11 entry.
Priority goes first to Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in SD43, then to those living outside SD43, then to international students.
The intake assessment has four parts: mathematics (60 minutes, not tied to any grade), writing (45 minutes), reading (45 minutes) and a small-group creativity task (45 minutes). No study guides are provided.
Gifted services in SD43 are mostly school-based for students identified as gifted. Ask your school's gifted education contact.
A good fit if: Motivated Grade 8 students in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and nearby who enjoy a heavier academic load.
How to register
- Attend an information night in the Port Moody Secondary gym on December 1 or 2, 2026 at 7 p.m.
- Complete both online application forms before 4 p.m. on December 18, 2026. Late applications are not accepted.
- Pick up a teacher referral form at the info night or school office. A current teacher fills it in and seals it, and your child brings it to the assessment.
- Write the assessment on Saturday, January 16, 2027 at Port Moody Secondary.
- Results are emailed on January 22, 2027 at 4 p.m. Confirm acceptance by 3 p.m. on February 1, 2027.
How to prepare
- No report card is required, and there's no study guide. The math section tests general ability, not a grade's curriculum.
- Problem-solving contests like Gauss in Grade 7 and 8 are good, low-pressure practice.
For grade-by-grade options see Grade 8.
