What it is

The contest is for high school students under 20. It's aimed at the top 10% of students and is set at the level of about two years of advanced high school chemistry.

Part A is multiple choice and Part B is a short essay. Part C, the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad, is for the top 5% and leads toward the International Chemistry Olympiad team.

The national coordinator is based at UBC.

A good fit if: Grade 11–12 students who are strong in chemistry. Younger students taking senior chemistry can also try.

How to register

  1. A teacher signs up using the 2027 registration form on the CIC website.
  2. The deadline is 12 noon Eastern time on December 29, 2026, so ask a chemistry teacher in November or early December.

How to prepare

  • Review Chemistry 11 and 12 topics. The contest is set at about two years of advanced high school chemistry.

Common questions

Can my child write it at home?

No. It's online, but it must be written in person under the supervision of the student's teacher.

What is the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad?

Part C of the contest, for about the top 5% of students. It's the route toward Canada's International Chemistry Olympiad team.
