Vancouver mini schools: how to apply for Grade 8 in September 2027
What Vancouver's mini schools are, the programs and their focus, the two-step application for September 2027 (district registry November 16 to December 17, 2026, plus each program's own application), early tests and deadlines, how hard it is to get in, and what to do if your child isn't accepted.

The short answer
Mini schools are small enriched programs inside Vancouver secondary schools. Your child applies in Grade 7 and starts in Grade 8. For September 2027, the district registrysource ↗ is open from 9 a.m. on November 16 to 11:59 p.m. on December 17, 2026.
The registry is only step one. Your child must also apply to each program separatelysource ↗, on that program's own form, by its own deadline. Most are due December 17, 2026, but a few programs hold a test in early December, so check now.
It is competitive. The VSB says over 1,400 students apply for about 500 Grade 8 spacessource ↗ each year. Only students who live in Vancouver can apply.
What a mini school is, and who it suits
The VSB describes mini schools as enrichment for highly motivated Vancouver residentssource ↗ who consistently work at a Proficient level and want a challenge. Students usually take their core classes together as one group (a cohort) and join the rest of the school for things like PE and electives. At Tupper Minisource ↗, for example, English, Social Studies, Science and Math are mini-only, and PE, electives and languages are with the whole school.
Each program has its own focus. Some speed up math and science, some are built around humanities, the arts, leadership or the outdoors. Most run from Grade 8 to Grade 12, and several ask for a five-year commitment, like Prince of Walessource ↗ and Point Greysource ↗.
A mini school suits a child who is curious, organised and keen on that program's focus. It is not the only way to get a challenging education: the VSB says all its secondary schools offer challenging programssource ↗, and many have their own enrichment.
The programs for September 2027
This list and the focus of each program come from the VSB's September 2027 Grade 8 choice programs brochuresource ↗, which also lists each information night.
Science, math and technology: David Thompson Odysseysource ↗ (accelerated math and science, enriched English and Social Studies), Vancouver Technical Summitsource ↗ (enriched science and math with social justice and leadership), Killarney Computer Sciencesource ↗ (enriched math, science and IT, then a specialty such as programming, cyber security or robotics) and John Oliver Digital Immersionsource ↗ (technology-rich learning, field studies and math acceleration).
Broad academic enrichment: Gladstone Minisource ↗ (Grades 8, 9 and 10 in two years), Point Grey Minisource ↗ (community, leadership, service and outdoor education), Prince of Wales Minisource ↗, Templeton Minisource ↗ (problem solving and project-based learning), Tupper Minisource ↗ (enriched English, Social Studies and Science, accelerated math in Grades 8 and 9) and Ideal Mini at Churchillsource ↗ (a small cohort focused on community and mentorship).
Humanities: Hamber Challenge Studiosource ↗ (humanities-based, with English, Social Studies, Science and Critical Thinking/Fine Arts in Grade 8) and Vancouver Technical Flex Humanitiessource ↗ (philosophy, literature, history, film and the arts).
Leadership: Windermere Leadershipsource ↗ (environmental stewardship and social responsibility, with outdoor education) and King George Catalystsource ↗ (a two-year leadership cohort).
Arts and IB preparation: Byng Artssource ↗ at Lord Byng (visual arts, strings, band, choir, media arts and drama) and Britannia Venturesource ↗ (Grades 8 to 10, built to prepare students for the IB Diploma at Britannia).
The VSB lists two more Grade 8 choice programs on the same page: Magee SPARTSsource ↗, a part-time timetable for students in high-level athletics or performing arts, and the Britannia Hockey Academysource ↗.
How to apply for September 2027
1. Go to information nights in October and November. Each program holds its own; the dates are in the VSB brochuresource ↗. Some fill up: Hambersource ↗ asks families to book tickets.
2. Complete the district registrysource ↗ between 9 a.m. November 16 and 11:59 p.m. December 17, 2026. Your child registers once and names their top three programs. They can still apply to as many programs as they likesource ↗. You'll need your child's PEN (Personal Education Number), which is on their report card.
3. Apply to each program on its own form. Most want a paper or online application, the Grade 6 report cards and the December Grade 7 report card, and proof that you live in Vancouver. There is no district-wide testsource ↗; each program decides whether to test or interview.
4. Watch for tests, interviews and offers in January and February. The VSB says first offers come at the end of February and second offers in Marchsource ↗. Programs that have posted 2027 dates, like Prince of Walessource ↗ and Templetonsource ↗, send first offers on February 17, 2027, with about two days to reply, and second offers on February 24.
Your child can accept only one offersource ↗. Once they accept, their name is removed from every other program's listsource ↗, so a first-round yes ends the process.
Rank carefully. Prince of Walessource ↗, Templetonsource ↗, Summitsource ↗ and Windermeresource ↗ all say they give preference to students who rank them first. Prince of Wales says you can update your ranking in the registry, but Windermere's FAQ says the VSB won't change it, so get it right the first time.
Each program's own steps and dates
Early dates to put in your calendar now: Templeton Minisource ↗ holds a one-hour writing and math assessment on December 3, 2026 (sign up on its site). Hamber Challenge Studiosource ↗ holds its assessment on December 9, and registration for it closes December 2.
David Thompson Odysseysource ↗: online application from October 1 to 3 p.m. December 17, 2026. Paper copies of the final Grade 6 and December Grade 7 report cards are due at the school by 3 p.m. on January 8, 2027, the same day as the mandatory test. Selected students are interviewed on February 1. There are no alternative dates.
Byng Artssource ↗: pick up the application envelope from the school office in October. The envelope and Part 1 online are due by 3 p.m. on December 17, and the arts supplement (videos or art pieces, depending on the department) by January 1. Shortlisted students interview or audition on February 1 and 2.
Prince of Wales Minisource ↗: paper application with report cards by 3 p.m. December 17. About 100 students are shortlisted for a 90-minute session on February 2 with a numeracy and literacy assessment, a group activity and an interview.
Tupper Minisource ↗: paper application by 3 p.m. December 17. Every applicant with a complete application is interviewed, in groups, on January 20, 2027.
Britannia Venturesource ↗: application due by 11:59 p.m. December 17, with online interviews January 18 to 22, 2027. Ideal Minisource ↗: paper form to the Churchill office by 3 p.m. December 17; selected students get an online interview. Flex Humanitiessource ↗: intake form by 3 p.m. December 17. King George Catalystsource ↗: application due December 17.
Vancouver Technical Summitsource ↗ is later: the application and report cards are due at Van Tech by noon on January 5, 2027. About 60 students are invited to testing and interviews on February 2.
Not posted yet when we checked: Windermere Leadershipsource ↗ says its digital application is usually due around December 18, with the exact date to come. Gladstonesource ↗, Killarneysource ↗, John Oliversource ↗ and Point Greysource ↗ still showed last year's process. Last year Killarney's application and test were both on December 5, before the registry closed, so check its page often.
How hard is it to get in?
Across all programs, the VSB says over 1,400 students apply for about 500 Grade 8 spacessource ↗ each year. Many children apply to several programs, so that isn't one child's chance at one program.
A few programs publish their own numbers. Van Tech Summitsource ↗ usually receives around 200 applications and accepts 28. Windermere Leadershipsource ↗ shortlists about 50 and offers 28 places. Ideal Minisource ↗ receives over 200 applications. Point Greysource ↗ takes 28 students a grade, and last year invited about 230 to its assessment. Killarneysource ↗ selected 30 students last year.
Programs look at more than marks. Summitsource ↗, for example, looks for Extending in math and science and Proficient or better in other subjects, plus test results, teacher comments and interviews. Windermeresource ↗ doesn't test math or writing at all; it looks at how students work with others.
What happens to your catchment secondary place
Apply to your catchment secondary as usual. The VSB says families should first apply to the catchment school, then apply for the district programsource ↗. If your child is in a VSB elementary school, the school handles the Grade 8 registration for you. If they're at a private or independent school, you register online yourself.
If your child accepts a mini school place, they go to that secondary instead. Mini schools are district programs, so there's no cross-boundary formsource ↗ and no catchment to cross.
Leaving later is possible but not automatic. Under the VSB's admission rules (Administrative Procedure 300)source ↗, a student who leaves a mini school during the year may be moved to their catchment school, and staying at the same school the next year means a cross-boundary application. A student who finishes a multi-year program can stay in the regular program there if there's space, or ask to move to their catchment school, joining its waitlist if it's full.
Is a mini school right for my child?
The commute. Most children won't live near their program. Tupper Minisource ↗ says some students have left because of a long commute. Do the trip on a school morning before you rank a program.
The workload. Tupper calls the work "a step up" and says students with strong work habits do best. Some programs move fast: Gladstonesource ↗ covers Grades 8 to 10 in two years, and Summitsource ↗ spends about 80% of Grade 8 class time on Math 9 material.
Friends and the cohort. Your child spends much of the day with the same small group for years: Point Greysource ↗ and Summitsource ↗ each take 28 students a grade. Many love that. It also means starting somewhere their elementary friends may not go.
Other plans. Some programs don't fit with French Immersion or bilingual programs: Summitsource ↗ can't be combined with French Immersion, and Windermeresource ↗ can't promise the Early Mandarin Bilingual timetable. Prince of Walessource ↗ asks families not to apply if the child plans to leave for TREK or IB.
Cost. Applying is free, but most programs charge yearly fees for trips and activities. Tuppersource ↗ lists $458 for Grade 8, including a $340 program fee. Prince of Walessource ↗ says enrichment and trip fees are about $1,300 a year, with a bursary so no student misses out. Ask each program what help is available.
Ask your child. Programs want students who are keen on their focus. The best choice is usually the one your child is excited about, not the best-known name.
If your child doesn't get in, or you missed the deadline
Your child's catchment secondary is still there. Applying to a mini school doesn't replace the usual catchment registrationsource ↗, which goes ahead at the same time.
Apply cross-boundary in February. If you'd like a different secondary's regular program, the cross-boundary windowsource ↗ runs from the first to the last school day of February. You must register at your catchment school first, and "full" schools rarely have room.
School-based programs. Some secondaries run their own enriched programs, like Synergy at Churchillsource ↗ and STEM at Templetonsource ↗. The VSB brochure says catchment students get prioritysource ↗ and others apply cross-boundary. Ask your catchment school what it offers.
Apply again for Grade 9 or later. Several programs fill spaces when students leave: Prince of Walessource ↗ posts openings on its website, Templetonsource ↗ and Tuppersource ↗ take applications when a spot opens, Windermeresource ↗ has a separate Grade 9 application, Idealsource ↗ takes Grade 9 to 12 applications in March, and Britannia Venturesource ↗ takes Grade 9 and 10 applicants. Summitsource ↗ says it rarely has openings after Grade 8.
IB in Grades 11 and 12. Britanniasource ↗ and Churchillsource ↗ offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Students apply in Grade 10source ↗ to start in Grade 11.
Common questions
When is the Vancouver mini school application deadline for 2027?
There are two. The district registrysource ↗ closes at 11:59 p.m. on December 17, 2026. Each program's own application has its own deadline: most are December 17, but Summitsource ↗ is January 5, 2027, and Templetonsource ↗ and Hambersource ↗ hold assessments on December 3 and 9.
How many mini schools can my child apply to?
As many as they like. The registry asks for their top three choicessource ↗, and several programs, such as Prince of Walessource ↗, give preference to students who rank them first.
Is there a mini school entrance exam in Vancouver?
There's no district-wide testsource ↗. Some programs hold their own, like David Thompson Odysseysource ↗ on January 8, 2027, and others only interview, like Tuppersource ↗.
When do mini schools send offers?
The VSB says first offers come at the end of February and second offers in Marchsource ↗. Programs that have posted 2027 dates, like Prince of Walessource ↗, send first offers on February 17 and second offers on February 24, 2027.
